Only 20 km away from Bangkok, that is home to the protected Bryde’s whales which can weigh up to 20 tons with 15-meter long. Breaching the water’s surface, their giant jaws open and swallow entire schools of fish. It happened many times that these whales ingested rubbish. Many of them found dead with plastic in their stomachs.
Where do these wastes come from? 80% of ocean plastic comes from land-based sources. Thailand uses 5,300 tons of plastic bags per year, ranking among the world’s worst contributor of marine debris.
These Bryde’s whales live and nurse their calves in the Chao Phraya River estuary – the river which carries the most plastic waste of the country to the oceans. Is it time to stop using single-use plastics for the Bryde’s whales and all marine life?
